RCSG secured $5.5 million in dedicated state funding for the New Jersey Symphony across three consecutive budget cycles.
Client Profile: New Jersey Symphony
The New Jersey Symphony is one of the state’s most historic cultural institutions and the largest employer of unionized performing artists in New Jersey.
Performing in five major venues and offering extensive free community and education programs, it serves as both a cultural anchor and statewide resource.
Problem: Post Covid Funding Shortfalls and Lack of Awareness
- COVID Funding Reduction: In 2023, as the Symphony marked its centennial, it faced post-pandemic challenges including reduced ticket sales and programming.
- Lack of Political Relationships: Before our engagement, many state leaders were not fully aware of the Symphony’s statewide reach and impact. They were not familiar with the Symphony’s role working with five major performing arts centers across the state. There was also a lack of awareness and understanding regarding the community, education and health programs the Symphony offers in partnership with other organizations.
Strategy: Education, Direct Engagement, and Utilization of Assets
- Build Direct Engagement: Through one-on-one meetings with legislators and Governor’s Office.
- Re-Framing: Position the symphony as a cultural institution, economic driver and major employers in New Jersey.
- Build Supporters: Expanded support through targeted use of Symphony’s relationship map and community programming.
