Trump Administration Hits Pause on Offshore Wind Projects
In the days following his inauguration, President Donald Trump signed an executive order to temporarily halt offshore wind lease sales in federal waters and pause the issuance of approvals, permits, and loans for both onshore and offshore wind projects.
The interior secretary will review wind leasing and permitting practices for federal waters and lands. The assessment will consider the environmental impact of wind projects on wildlife, the economic costs associated with the intermittent generation of electricity, and the effect of subsidies on the viability of the wind industry.
New Jersey Congressman Jeff Van Drew worked with the Trump Administration to craft the executive order.
On Monday, the state Board of Public Utilities announced the state would not grant awards for new offshore wind contracts, a sign that U.S. President Donald Trump's order to review the federal offshore wind program is putting a chill on the industry.
Three Gubernatorial Candidates Qualify for Matching Funds
Republicans Jack Ciattarelli and state Sen. Jon Bramnick, along with Democratic Rep. Mikie Sherrill, are the first three candidates to qualify for matching public funds in the 2025 race for governor of New Jersey.
Gubernatorial candidates can qualify for up to $5.5 million from the state in the primary if they raise about $2.9 million from private sources.
Democratic Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop has been leading the pack in fundraising — bringing in more than $3 million since the beginning of his campaign — but has not yet qualified for matching funds.
Fulop, along with other candidates, can still qualify to receive matching funds throughout the year.
