Restart & Recovery Stage 2 Starts June 15: At his daily press briefing on Monday, Governor Phil Murphy announced that the state will allow restaurants to re-open for outdoor dining and “non-essential retail” to allow limited, in-person consumer transactions, starting on June 15th.
Personal care businesses, such as hair salons, nail salons and barber shops can reopen on June 22, while gyms and health clubs will be able to reopen at some point in the coming weeks, on a limited basis.
These are the latest round of restrictions to be lifted as the speared of the COVID-19 pandemic continues to slow across the state.
$5 Billion Emergency Borrowing Plan Passes Assembly Committee: On Monday, Governor Murphy’s proposed $5 billion emergency borrowing plan passed the Assembly Budget Committee with a 9-4 vote. The bill, supported by Assembly Speaker Craig Coughlin, now heads to the full Assembly for a vote this Thursday.
Although Senate President Sweeney conceded that some borrowing was inevitable to fill massive holes left in the state budget from the state’s COVID-19 response, he has not taken a position on the proposed $5 billion rescue plan.
“Without more robust and flexible federal aid, as well the ability to borrow, the cuts that will be required to produce a balanced budget will be devastating,” said New Jersey Treasurer Elizabeth Maher Muoio.
Atlantic City Casinos Could Reopen July 4th Weekend: New Jersey’s 9 casinos, which have been closed since March 16, could possibly reopen as early as July 4th weekend, said Governor Phil Murphy. On Sunday, the Governor was a guest of the WOND-AM 1400 Radio’s, the “AC Mike Show,” when he indicated “its probably still too early to give you a specific answer, but there is a lot of work going into that right now. But we are trying like heck to get toward, I hope, before Fourth of July or at least by the Fourth of July.”
NJ Realizes Sustained Improvement in Public Health Indicators: On Monday, Governor Murphy released a new round of public health statistics that show that New Jersey is making significant improvements in several key healthcare markers:
- New hospitalizations: Down 84% since peak
- Patients in hospitals: Down 70% since peak
- Patients in ICU: Down 68% since peak
- Patients on ventilators: Down 72% since peak
New Jersey also continues to ramp up the number of COVID-19 tests being given on a daily basis, now leading the nation in daily testing, per capita.
Latest NJ COVID-19 Statistics: The number positive coronavirus test results in New Jersey has increased to a total of 160,918. The number of statewide coronavirus-related deaths is currently 11,721.
