George Helmy, the chief of staff to Gov. Phil Murphy for more than four and a half years, is leaving the administration but will remain a top political adviser to the Democratic governor, Murphy announced Tuesday.
Helmy has been Murphy’s right-hand man in state government since early 2019, a timeframe Murphy said is the longest of any governor’s chief of staff in state history. It’s a post that made Helmy one of the most influential non-elected officials in the Garden State.
