In early 2020, on behalf of our client Vote.org, River Crossing Strategy Group worked with a team of in-house and external government affairs professionals to build legislative support for a bill (S589) that requires the New Jersey Secretary of State to create and maintain a secure website to allow eligible voters to register to vote using an online form. New Jersey was the 38th state to institute online voter registration.
In early January 2020, the bill passed the State Senate 27-10 and 61-14-2 in the state assembly. On January 21, 2020, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy signed the bill into law.
“We are stronger and fairer when more New Jerseyans are represented in our democracy,” Murphy said in a statement. “Expanding access to voting is one of many ways we can work to enfranchise more voters and ensure that all eligible voters are able to participate in the democratic process.”
